About Alliance for Women in Media
Our Mission
The mission of AWM is to advance the impact of women in the electronic media and allied fields by educating, advocating and acting as a resource to our members and the industry.
Our Goals
- Work to improve the quality of the electronic media;
- Promote the entry, development and advancement of women in the electronic media and allied fields;
- Serve as a medium of communication and idea exchange; and
- Become involved in community concerns.
Our History
This year, the Alliance for Women in Media celebrated a milestone – our 60th Anniversary. 60 years for any association is a long time. In the women’s community, it makes us an elder stateswoman – because there were very few organizations formed to support and grow women professionals until the past few decades. We are very proud of that history, and continue to be a forward-looking organization to ensure we support women in an ever-changing industry. AWM was formed in 1951 when the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) discontinued its women’s division, the Association of Women Directors (AWD). The NAB Board voted approval of a new organization, offering complete cooperation and assistance until the new organization could work out the details of separate operation. The following year, over 280 women gathered to approve the structure of the new organization.
Our Initiatives
Government and regulatory advocacy, publications, job information services, professional development programs and educational networking opportunities.
